Hermes

Hermes is a powerful, self-improving AI agent. This guide explains how to connect Hermes to the UURoute API platform and use any model you prefer.

Prerequisites

Make sure Hermes is installed or ready to be installed before continuing.

Install Hermes

Follow the official Hermes installation guide.

After installation, reload your shell configuration so the changes take effect:

source ~/.bashrc    # If you use macOS or zsh, run: source ~/.zshrc

Configure Hermes

Start the global setup wizard from your terminal:

hermes setup

Use the Up and Down arrow keys to move through the options, then press Enter to confirm your selection.

Select Quick Setup

Choose the recommended quick setup option:

  • Highlight Quick setup — provider, model & messaging (recommended).
  • Press Enter to confirm.

Select a Terminal Backend

Choose the local backend:

  • Highlight ( ) Local - run directly on this machine (default).
  • Press Enter to confirm.

Select a Model Provider

Because UURoute is configured as a custom platform, enter its endpoint manually:

  • Press the Down arrow until you reach the bottom of the list.
  • Select ( ) Custom endpoint (enter URL manually).
  • Press Enter to confirm.

Configure the UURoute Endpoint

  • API base URL: Enter https://api.uuroute.ai/v1. Make sure to include /v1, then press Enter.
  • API key [optional]: Paste the API key you created on UURoute.

For security, the terminal does not display any characters while you enter or paste your API key. This is expected.

Select the API Compatibility Mode

After verification succeeds, Hermes displays a message similar to Verified endpoint via... (XX models visible). This confirms that Hermes is connected to UURoute.

Press Enter to keep the default option: 1. Auto-detect [current].

Select a Model

Hermes automatically lists all models available through UURoute, each with a number, such as 25. gpt-4.1 or 41. gpt-5.5.

Enter the number of the model you want to use—for example, 41—then press Enter.

Set the Context Length

When you see [leave blank for auto-detect], press Enter without entering a value. Hermes will automatically detect the appropriate context length.

Set a Display Name

Enter a name for this provider. It will appear in the chat status bar. Press Enter to keep the default Api.UURoute.ai, or enter a shorter name such as UURoute.

Configure Messaging Platforms

The wizard asks whether you want to configure messaging platforms such as Telegram or Discord. For your first setup, we recommend skipping this step. Leave all options unchecked and press Enter to finish the configuration.

Verify the Connection

After setup is complete, start the Hermes chat interface:

hermes

To verify the integration:

  • Check the status: Confirm that the status bar at the bottom of the chat interface shows the provider name and model you configured, for example api.uuroute.ai / gpt-5.5.
  • Send a test message: Enter a simple prompt such as Hello! Please briefly introduce yourself.
  • Confirm success: If the model returns a streamed response and the corresponding token usage appears in your UURoute dashboard, the integration is working correctly.
